Chapter 20

Jason’s lecture was meant to last an hour, but by the time he finished taking questions from eager surgical students, it was nearly six o’clock. The hall finally emptied, and Jason collected his things and walked out with a doctor of his acquaintance, who offered him a ride home in his carriage since he was heading in the same direction. Jason was tempted to accept but realized he wasn’t quite ready to go home. He trusted Daniel’s judgment and agreed that there was no urgency when it came to Angel Flyte and they could speak to her tomorrow, but something inside him demanded that he see the performance for himself.

Sadie Goodall had painted Angel as a clever businesswoman who had a talent for working the crowd, but having met Alicia, Jason now knew that there were individuals who had been blessed—or maybe cursed was the more fitting term—with an extra sense. He had no reason to believe Sadie, who had to be envious of Angel’s success, and wanted to evaluate the medium’s talents for himself. She had to be doing something right if she managed to fill a theater designed for one hundred spectators every night. Admittedly, the public was ridiculously easy to dupe, but after the first few missteps, people would catch on if they were paying to see a fake. Angel had been delivering for months, so some of her messages had found their mark.

Bidding his colleague goodnight, Jason found a cab and directed the driver to take him to Covent Garden. The cab crawled along, stopping frequently to allow for evening traffic, but as the businessmen and laborers finally arrived at home after a long day at work, the traffic began to disperse, and the conveyance began to move at a good clip. Covent Garden was crowded with pedestrians, but the market was empty, the stalls dismantled, and the vendors all gone. There was the usual odor of rotting fruit, rancid meat, and sour milk, since it hadn’t rained, and the cobbles were slimy with refuse. Ragged children darted across the market, filling their arms with whatever they could find, from broken crates that could be used for firewood to anything that was still edible, even if it was rotten. Jason looked away, saddened by his inability to help these poor wretches in any meaningful way.

He arrived at the theater at twenty to seven, purchased a ticket, and went inside. The interior of the theater was hardly more than a square room where ten rows of chairs, each made up of ten seats, faced the stage. There was no backdrop, no curtain, and no footlights, only bare boards and a black wooden rectangle positioned in the middle and toward the rear of the stage. Four sconces were mounted on the walls, two at the front near the stage and two toward the back.
